Mark Thompson has an outstanding background in business and banking laws and regulations. Mark has a unique combination of legal expertise and business, accounting and finance knowledge. Mark has been advising businesses since 1981. As a private practitioner, his clients have included many businesses, including small banks, restaurant developers and managers, oil & gas companies, software companies, manufacturers, wholesalers and retailers. For 13 years, he was counsel to two Fortune 500 companies, The Western Union Company and First Data Corporation. During the Great Recession, he served as counsel to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and worked on the "living will" and FDIC Receivership regulations.
He attended the University of Iowa, where he earned a business degree in finance, magna cum laude, in 1976. He attended the University of Michigan Law School, where he earned is juris doctor degree, magna cum laude, in 1981. He is licensed to practice law in Colorado and Utah.
In 1981, Mark began his practice in Denver, Colorado, with a large law firm. With two partners, he formed a boutique business law firm in 1986 and continued with that firm until 1996, when he took an in-house position with First Data Corp. and its Western Union subsidiary. The Western Union Company was spun off from First Data in September 2006. Mark remained with the Western Union businesses as associate general counsel. In 2006, he moved to South Florida and worked out of Western Union's regional Florida office, serving business clients in North, South and Central America, until September 2009. In 2010, he moved to the Washington D.C. area to work for the FDIC. In 2016, Mark moved to Bountiful, Utah where he has extended family. He opened his practice in Utah in July 2020.
His practice emphasizes business formations, acquisitions, sales and financing. He has experience with various aspects of banking, including regulatory matters, changes in control and commercial lending. He also assists clients with commercial real estate transactions, purchases, sales, leases and development and construction loans. Specific legal and business experience includes:

His background in accounting and finance when coupled with his knowledge of business law and regulation provides his clients with a strong partner to help them address their business issues and complete their expansion plans.
Mark believes in community service. For the last four years, he volunteered as site coordinator and tax return preparer in the IRS-sponsored Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling (VITA) program. He has worked in sites in Bountiful, North Salt Lake and Kaysville preparing income tax returns for free for low income taxpayers and the elderly.
